Introducing: Open-E JovianDSS - Software Defined Data Storage
Today, Open-E revealed the newest data storage software designed for enterprise-sized storage environments: Open-E JovianDSS…
Read MoreToday, Open-E released a major update for its software-defined storage system – Open-E JovianDSS. Update up02 b14241 includes Snapshots, Clones and Volume Shadow Copy Service – all important for simplifying and having consistent backups. Additionally, Open-E made it easier for users to manage storage remotely via SSH. These technologies further extend enterprise features already present in the ZFS-based Open-E JovianDSS.
Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)
Open-E’s storage engineers included the Open-E VSS Hardware Provider in Open-E JovianDSS. This technology allows taking automatic point-in-time snapshots triggered by Volume Shadow Copy Services – even when data volumes are currently in use. This enables consistent and nearly instant recovery of a single or multiple volumes. VSS Hardware Provider is used in combination with a requester application, such as backup and recovery.
Thanks to offloading snapshot-related-load to Open-E JovianDSS powered storage appliance, VSS Hardware Provider offers nearly instant backup and recovery of volumes running under heavy duty load production. Without it, backups which typically generate heavy load must be scheduled after hours – making backups almost impossible for a 24/7 heavy load production environment.
Snapshots
Snapshots let you create points-in-time copies of your volumes, at the same time providing instant backup consuming almost no disk space. They are a must-have option for effective disaster recovery scenarios.
Clones
A clone is a writable copy of a snapshot. This new feature in Open-E JovianDSS enables administrators to use identical copies of their production environment without consuming any additional disk space. Most importantly, clones can be changed or deleted without affecting the original data.
Remote management of storage via SSH
There are times when you are required to access your storage server remotely via the SSH protocol (Secure Shell) instead of the Web GUI. With update up02 b14241, Open-E JovianDSS users can securely use the CLI command line interface (CLI) to manage their storage infrastructure.
