    Open-E JovianDSS Up30 – a Game Changing Update

We are delighted to let you know that the new Open-E JovianDSS Up30 version is released and ready to use! The latest update brings a lot of advanced features and improvements that will enhance your data storage performance, reliability, safety, as well as cost efficiency. In this blog article, we will highlight some of the most exciting novelties you can expect from the Open-E JovianDSS Up30 version.

Open-E JovianDSS Up30 Most Important Highlights

One of the most notable new features is the introduction of ZFS Special Devices, which allow you to store specific types of data on high-performance data storage devices. Open-E JovianDSS users will also be thrilled to hear that they can now utilize the NVMe partitions, which enable them to divide the NVMe disk space and use one device for different purposes, saving money, and making data storage management easier and even more user-friendly.

To learn more about the most important Open-E JovianDSS Up30 features, as well as the additional improvements, and system developments, keep reading!

ZFS Special Devices Introduced in Open-E JovianDSS Up30

With ZFS Special Devices, the file system will store specific types of data, such as metadata or small file blocks, on dedicated high-performance data storage devices like SSDs or NVMes.

This unique approach can be described as “data-type tiering”. While this functionality might seem akin to traditional data tiering, there’s a distinct difference. Traditional data tiering categorizes data based on its “temperature” – frequently accessed or “hot” data is stored on faster media, while less frequently accessed or “cold” data finds its place on slower media.

In contrast, ZFS Special Devices prioritize metadata. Additionally, small records on datasets can also be placed on these Special Devices as well. This strategic placement significantly improves the overall performance of the data storage system.

NVMe Partitioning Now Available in Open-E JovianDSS

Thanks to the Open-E JovianDSS Up30, you can now divide the NVMe disk space into partitions to use one device for both read cache and write log, and even to create an additional partition for Special Devices. The NVMe’s partitions allow you to optimize your NVMe disk capacity utilization, which means less hardware used and money spent. It also simplifies your data storage system architecture, management, and maintenance.

    Additional Open-E JovianDSS Up30 Improvements

    • The “Send Compressed Data” Option in Open-E JovianDSS On- & Off-Site Data Protection
Using the ‘Send Compressed Data’ option in the On & Off-Site Data Protection feature allows you to transmit already compressed data efficiently. When datasets are compressed at the source, they’re sent directly (without decompression), leading to faster transfers and reduced bandwidth usage. This eliminates the additional workload before transmission, speeding up (especially large) dataset transfers.
    • MacOS Time Machine Support
We have introduced the MacOS Time Machine support for creating, finding, and restoring copies over SMB protocol.
    • Active Directory with RID Range
The multiple trusted domains support without RID conflicts is available as well.
    • Active Directory support for rfc2307 (AD backend for Samba)
You can now configure the Unix UID and Unix-like GID through Microsoft Windows Domain Administrator.
    • Adaptec HPE Smart Storage Administrator
We have added the support for Adaptec controller’s native WEB GUI tools.
    • Self-Encrypting Drives (SED) support for non-shared clusters
In addition to SED support for Shared Clusters introduced in Open-E JovianDSS Up29r2, you can now utilize the Self-Encrypting Drives in Non-shared Cluster configurations.
    • Samba Recycle Bin Support for Windows
Deleted data are now moved to the recycle bin Samba catalog instead of being permanently deleted.
    • Zero-configuration Networking (Zeroconf) Feature Support
The zeroconf feature is now available, along with the additional discovery options for services.
    • TRIM for Selected Drives
SSD TRIM can now be used for the drives of your choice.
    • LSI SNMP Agent Support
    • Driver for Broadcom HBA 9600-16e 12Gb Tri-Mode Storage Adapter (mpi3mr, v8.6.1.0.0)
    • New GUI Features
      • Active SMB and iSCSI user connection statistics
(you can find them in the Service Status tab)
      • S.M.A.R.T. monitoring
      • ZFS ARC, L2ARC, and ZIL statistics
    • New TUI Features
      • New Testing Profiles Available
New predefined performance testing profiles are available in TUI, and there is also a possibility to add custom profiles as well.
      • Check_mk Agent Management Options
There is a possibility to turn off the Check_mk Agent
