Open-E JovianDSS Integration with
Proxmox VE - Efficient Virtualization with Open-source Solution

See how our team took hypervisor-agnosticism to the next level! Experience a new, stable, and reliable way of managing your virtual machines & their data thanks to Open-E JovianDSS storage back-end for Proxmox VE!

Main Value of Open‑E JovianDSS & Proxmox VE Integration

Thanks to the extensive tests performed in the Open-E QA Lab, our team of experts ensured that Open-E JovianDSS can successfully work as a data storage back-end to support Proxmox VE. What’s more - our team also tested the usage of Open-E JovianDSS On- & Off-Site Data Protection feature for this integration, resulting in achieving an additional, reliable protection layer for your virtual machines, and allowing you to create backup of single files, entire virtual machines, and whole virtualized environments.

Which Connection Protocols Are Supported by Open‑E JovianDSS

The performed tests involved a comprehensive evaluation of the system configuration, explicitly focusing on the integration and performance of the NFS protocol. By conducting a series of carefully designed test scenarios, the team assessed the system’s ability to maintain seamless data access and operational continuity. These tests simulated various real-world conditions, including potential failures and disruptions, to ensure this solution provides users with a reliable, uninterrupted data storage system operations in case of Open-E JovianDSS failover. The results demonstrated that even in the event of a system failure or disaster, users can continue their operations with data, without downtime, enhancing overall resilience and efficiency.

Ensured Reliability for Open‑E JovianDSS & Proxmox VE Integration

The Open-E Team tested several scenarios to ensure that the integration would deal with any disruptive scenario that may come your way.

HA Cluster Operations on Open-E JovianDSS Side

Enables you to efficiently move pools, reboot the system, and power the system off,  without interrupting the whole system operations by taking advantage of the second active node for both Linux and Windows virtual machines.

HA Cluster Operations on Proxmox VE Side

Enables you to efficiently migrate storage, reboot the system, and power the system off,  and move virtual machines between servers by taking advantage of the additional active node for both Linux and Windows virtual machines.

Virtual Machines’ Data Backup & Restoration with Open-E JovianDSS On- & Off-Site Data Protection

Enables you to restore single files, single virtual machines or whole virtualized environments from nodes utilized by the Open-E JovianDSS HA Clusters, as well as by using additional backups stored on the separate backup server.

Open‑E JovianDSS & Proxmox VE Integrated Systems Configuration

The recommended configuration for integrating Open-E JovianDSS and Proxmox VE consists of six machines: five operating in two clusters and one serving as an additional backup node. This setup ensures high availability across both systems by adding an extra data protection layer and incorporating another Open-E JovianDSS node, empowering your infrastructure with On- & Off-site Data Protection (OODP).

OODP delivers 24/7, continuous backup and disaster recovery with intervals as short as one minute. Its ultra-efficient design consumes minimal system resources, enabling uninterrupted backups — even in heavily loaded environments running thousands of virtual machines or containers.

A notable advantage of Proxmox VE is its use of a clustered filesystem exclusively for machine configuration data, excluding virtual disks. Because virtual disks do not reside on the clustered filesystem, Proxmox VE reduces overhead and can support more virtual machines or containers on the same hardware.

By combining an Open-E JovianDSS HA cluster with OODP and Proxmox VE, Internet service providers can build highly efficient computing environments that include built-in, enterprise-grade data protection—crucial for serving thousands of customers reliably. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) also benefit from these features by gaining enterprise-level capabilities at a lower cost compared to other solutions.
