Optima Packaging has over a 10-year-long story with Open-E products! Today you will get to know its latest chapter! After a very satisfying experience with the Open-E DSS V7-based system, the solution started to reach its limits regarding capacity. Facing the inevitable upgrade, Optima’s Data Storage Administrator - Manuel Kuss - decided on an Open-E software solution again, because as he says: “Open-E was, of course, the obvious choice.”.
Challenges
Centralization of data used in many locations all around the world can be a duty that spends your sleep. Fortunately, thanks to fruitful cooperation, a creative approach and a bunch of Open-E JovianDSS features we managed to come up with a solution that turned out to be a perfect match for such challenges as:
- Ensuring data security and availability for worldwide business activities
- Keeping track of the entire system’s performance and status
- Centralized data storage management
- Virtualization of the data storage
- Steady production operations
Solution
The new solution deployed a Non-shared Active-Passive High Availability Cluster with a single pool on each node, where one node functioned as a production appliance and the other as a backup node. VMware was the selected hypervisor for virtualization. Furthermore, the system was equipped with a backup solution (3rd node), which was made by reusing hardware components from the company’s old Open-E DSS V7-based system. This was a smart way to utilize the available hardware. Not to mention that this approach was also very eco-friendly and cost-effective.
Achieved Result
Migrating from Open-E DSS V7 to Open-E JovianDSS was an easy and intuitive process. It enabled Manuel to create a more complex and powerful environment with advanced data protection features that ensure continuous operations in all of Optima Packaging’s locations. He also took advantage of the hardware-agnostic nature of Open-E JovianDSS and reused old parts from his Open-E DSS V7-based system to create a backup solution that used Open-E JovianDSS On- & Off-Site Data Protection feature. Furthermore, the system was tailored to fit Optima Packaging’s virtualization needs, allowing them to run a centrally managed system for more control and easy monitoring of the system status.
