The actual usable capacity that is exported to the storage client. It is the result of multiplying the net unformatted storage capacity with the formatted capacity factor and pool max used capacity factor.

Net unformatted storage capacity

The unformatted capacity of all disks after RAID is applied. This capacity is used to calculate the licensed capacity for mirrored arrays.
Formatted capacity factor

The formatted capacity factor determines the data space available after formatting the disks. Operating systems show disk space in 1024 byte units. Hard drive manufacturers use 1 000 byte units instead. The formatted capacity factor allows calculating one unit into the other. Pool max used capacity factor

Open-E JovianDSS creates meta data to write and read the stored information. Additionally, it needs free space to work with the stored data, and use features such as copy-on-write and snapshots. This is an estimated value of how much space should be reserved for these purposes.

The licensing system is based on the capacity of each storage environment, and designed to be as fair as possible for users. You license only the usable capacity for mirrored arrays. In case of arrays with single, dual or triple parity, the license counts all disk capacity in the array but without cache and spare disks.
